THE COUNTRY CARS SCHEME
This scheme aims to assist people who find themselves without transport for essential purposes such as to the doctors, dentists etc or to a source of public transport. It is run by the WRVS, and financed and supported by Carmarthenshire County Council who pay for the fuel used by their teams of volunteer drivers. A fare is charged, much like a bus fare, with bus passes halving the cost to people using the service.
New volunteers are welcome to the scheme, which doesn’t ask for more time than a volunteer is prepared to give – just a few hours a week is valued.
Contact Liz O’Neill on 01994 240717 about the scheme, bearing in mind that you must have genuine problems with transport.
Wasps

"Oh look Flo at all them wasps over there in that garden - they look pretty angry to me" .

Energy Trail Sunday 21st August
A very interesting exhibition day was held at the Millennium Hall, with a number of residents offering their own energy options open for viewing. Teas and coffee served up by the faithful Wynn and Phill (Bookends) kept the many visitors refreshed throughout the day. Carmarthenshire County Council brought along one of their all electric cars, but no free rides.

Millennium Hall Side Garden improvements

The shrubs on the right side garden were removed in the first week of September in readiness for receiving a new notice board, a further seat or bench and a "Nut Tree" as part of bringing sustainable food to everyone plan of Transition Narberth.

Work was finished other than for filling in on the stone seat on 16th August. A temporary notice spelling out the information about the stone is displayed in the window. This will be replaced with a permanent sign, to be unveiled along with a "bit of a do!"

Improvements to the side garden include the positioning of the replica Vortipor Stone commissioned by the History Society. A new base has been cast beneath the stone, and the stone is resin bonded by three stainless steel rods into the slab.
The slab has then been covered with paving slabs to create a clear space all around the replica stone so that it can be examined and touched.
Further to the left of the Stone a rock pile of Pembrokeshire blue and green stones is still being constructed. The Vortipor Stone is made from the blue variety and this can be clearly seen in sunlight where the engravings have been made.

Historians have suggested that the Irish Ogham writing around the top and left edge (the notches) was made in the original stone when it was put up after Vortipor's death in around 540 AD.
The Latin inscription on the front face was probably added a 1000 years later where Christianity was spreading across the British Isles.
The original stone stands in the Museum at Abergwill, and was moved there from
Gwarmacwydd, having been discovered in the hedge at Castell
Dwyran churchyard until it was removed during repairs to the fence in 1879.

Fete and Show 2011 - 16th July 201
Yet again the fete was blessed with good weather during Saturday afternoon. The morning rain gave way to a breezy but sunny afternoon, but the rain returned just after closing to dampen down the enthusiasm of the helpers. There's a selection of photos on the Village Fete page.
The show in the Hall was again well supported and all the judges commented on the high standard set this year.
Highlight of the evening auction was the tens of pounds raised for Mike Powell's fruit cake, less one slice, that had been judged second in the show earlier.
History Society news
The Llanfallteg History Society have for some months been making preparations to have a replica of the Vortipor Stone carved ready for display in the Millennium Hall garden. The stone has just been returned from carving - a significant step forward. In the next few weeks there will activity outside the Millennium Hall to prepare a base for the stone to sit on.
ARMED FORCES DAY 2011
A small crowd gathered on a very wet sunset to witness the lowering of the Armed Forces Flag at the conclusion of Armed forces week, accompanied by the playing of "The last post"
NEW PLASH SIGN

A new sign has recently appeared outside The Plash Inn, and will surely boost the consumption of electricity over next winter! (May 2011)
Millennium Hall Solar PV inaugaration

The new solar PV system was switched on on 27th November 2010 by Sue Allen our CCC member, watched by a large crowd. The system is rated at 4 kW and should produce about 3400 units (KWH) per year for the next 25 years.
The display will show the instant production, and also value of the days production and CO2 saved.
The system was grant funded by CCC as part of the green energy program to encourage the uptake of this type of alternative energy production.

DESIGN A FLAG COMPETITION
The judges had a very difficult job when they went through the eighteen entries. No one entry ticked all the boxes and eventually it was decided to take elements from different entries to make up the flag. They particularly liked the ideas in the flag sent in by the youngest competitor, Emily L Jones from Bwthyn yr Afon. She gets the £10 prize. She thought the flag ought to contain the river and a train to remind people of the Cardi Bach. It was decided that the lettering should refer to the whole community of the modern parish of Henllanfallteg and so “Cymuned Henllanfallteg Community” was chosen. The final format of the flag is still being discussed.
Mari Lwyd seeks entry to The Plash Inn after the Morris Dancing
with Heb Enw on Boxing Day 2009.

Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare / Holy Mary) was the name most generally applied in Wales to the horse-figure formerly carried from door to door by wassail-singing groups during the Christmas season. This figure (which is, of course, represented in other countries) seems to have been once known all over southern Wales but during the present century relatively little has been seen of it outside of Glamorgan, where it is not yet completely extinct.
The attendant ritual began with the singing of traditional stanzas by the Mari Lwyd group at the door, soliciting both permission to sing and entry into the house, and issuing a challenge to a versifying contest.
Next followed the pwnco, the debate conducted to the same music in a combination of traditional and impromptu stanzas) between a member of the group and an opponent within the house. This usually amounted to heavy leg-pulling in which the contestants mocked each other's singing, drunkenness, niggardliness, etc.
Victory in the debate would ensure admission into the house for the Mari Lwyd group, to partake of cakes and ale and perhaps collect a money gift as well. In at least some cases, after the end of the debate, the group would sing additional stanzas introducing its individual members and finally, after entertaining the occupants of the house, it would deliver a farewell song.

November 2009 Rain
In Llanfallteg, November rainfall totaled 283 mm in 2009.
This was just over twice that of 2008, but still nothing to compare with
the 330mm that fell in 12 hours in the Lake District producing
the devastating floods they suffered.
